Winter Sessions

When the Supervision Rota ends for the year and there is no light left in the evenings, Summer Sessions give way to Winter Sessions. They are supposed to be the same in essence with just the time changed from a weekday evening to 2.30 to 4.00pm on a Saturday afternoon. In practice, the few that make the time change become even fewer in the weeks before Christmas, and only a long spell of fine weather will encourage a handful to turn out in the first three months of a new year. Unfortunately, fine weather in winter is usually characterised by sunny freezing cold days and long clear nights with heavy frosts. Only the hardiest venture forth to the courts for fun. Private coaching, yes, but fun ..... !

On those occasions when enough turn out at Winter Sessions to make activities feasible, care is taken to select only those games which keep everyone on the move. Frost, ice and snow would make play impossible, but it is surprising how few the occasions are which fall into this category.

The turnout at Winter Sessions this year is the poorest in memory. Jim turns up regularly, but is perfectly happy for John’s coaching to overrun into Sessions time on one court as this has no adverse effect on any Sessions activity.

If we do have a spell of fine Spring weather, any member reading this, preferably with a parent attached, is most welcome to come along and hit a few balls to keep the arm turning over ready for the new season starting in April.
