About Summerway

The Exeter (Summerway) Junior Lawn

Tennis Club was conceived in 1971 and
founded in 1972 out of the ashes of the
old Mede Tennis Club which served all
ages. In 1978 the Devon County Council
granted a twenty-eight year lease to the
new junior club at a peppercorn rent, thus
making tennis for youngsters possible at
affordable cost to the great majority of

families in the community. The two shale courts were resurfaced with macadam
making them suitable for play in all seasons. The concept of a junior club owned by the Council and run by an entirely voluntary committee consisting mainly of parents was inspired. Summerway has flourished.

The Club has two well qualified LTA coaches, John and Linda Harley (brother and sister), who generously give their time voluntarily to group coaching which is thereby available to eighty-five members as a privilege of membership.

The Committee, usually meeting nine or ten times each year, deals with all matters of Club policy. Summerway also has the voluntary services of an accredited ABTO referee, Jim Harle, who also acts as unofficial administrator.

Summerway is fully affiliated to the Devon LTA and operates the LTA’s Club Ratings scheme. A full programme of competition, both intra- and inter-club, is provided, including the LTA Official Exeter Summerway Open Junior Tennis Tournament in the Autumn half-term.

The Club is registered with the Inland Revenue as a Community Amateur Sports Club, having the Registered Number: CASC 01527

With demand for membership always exceeding supply and the constant curbing of activities by the limitations posed by having only two courts, the Club is actively campaigning for a further four courts. Hopefully, the Devon County Council will turn up trumps before the lease runs out at the end of March 2006.
