Exeter Summerway Open Junior Tennis Tournament

An open tournament during the Autumn half-term holiday has been a feature of the Club for a large number of years. In its infancy, there were Boys and Girls events in the 15&Under and 11&Under age groups. These were adjusted to 16&Under and 12&Under with the addition of 14&Under events. The number of events gradually grew until the Club applied for LTA Sanction in 1995 to run a Junior Age Group tournament offering Boys and Girls events in the 18, 16, 14, 12 & 10 age groups in Singles together with 18 & 14 Doubles. Our LTA code is JAG59 and we are hoping to hold our tenth LTA Official later in 2004.

As a two-court junior club, Summerway would not be able to host an open tournament of this size without a great deal of assistance from others. Three bodies have given unwavering support to the Exeter Summerway Open in its LTA Official form, and these deserve very special mention. They are Exeter City Council’s Sports Development department which helps in many different ways, the Victoria Park Club which allows the tournament the use of its courts and clubhouse during the half-term weekdays, and Exeter School which generously gives sponsorship by way of permitting the use of their three astroturf courts.

If you have opportunity to promote these far-sighted organisations, please take it. Also worthy of our thanks is Stuart Watson, who gave valuable financial sponsorship in the LTA tournament’s early years.

The tournament is held at a difficult time of the year for open air events, as the courts are often damp and conditions less than perfect. It is vitally important for competitors to play within the limits of the courts and conditions. Fortunately, with the co-operation of all those concerned, we usually manage to complete the events, including plates in all Singles.
