Election (cont.) |
The game of Election requires three supervisors: a Feeder/Umpire, a Caller and a Scorer. If necessary, it is possible to combine the offices of Caller and Scorer, who both stand at one end of the net. Such combination tends to slow down the game. Players take turns in rotation, and all have an equal number of turns. |
The Feeder stands behind the net at one end of the court with a hopper of balls. Two cones are placed at the same end on the singles sidelines midway between baseline and service line, and another two cones on the baseline midway between the singles sidelines and the centre mark. These define the left and right targets. The centre target is defined by a further two cones placed midway between each of the baseline cones and the centre mark. |
The players stand in line level with the baseline at the opposite end of the court, and no closer to the centre mark than the tramlines. Each player in turn comes to the centre mark, and a ball is suitably fed. As the ball passes over the net from the Feeder, the Caller shouts ‘Left’, ‘Centre’ or ‘Right’ following the order printed on the sides of this sheet, and returning to No.1 on the turn after No.23. The player attempts to hit the ball between the appropriate cones, and scores only if successful. The Scorer maintains a running total for each player. |
Players score three points if the ball first lands between the far service line and baseline, two points if the ball first lands between the net and far service line, and one point if the ball first lands beyond the baseline or sideline having clearly passed between the appropriate cones. If the ball is too high for it to be absolutely certain that it passed between the appropriate cones the player does not score. The points are doubled if the player is on the front foot as the ball is struck. |
